Honors Student Body Leadership Positions
My freshman year I served as the Honors Student Body First-Year Representative. This was a great learning opportunity for me to further build upon my leadership qualities. I felt that this helped me become more involved and connected to the Honors Program. Being the only first-year student on the executive board, I felt that it was important for me to voice my ideas and opinions, while respecting the authority that others in the group had due to their seniority and experience (Teams Level 3). After holding this leadership position, I felt it would be beneficial to me to run for another leadership role for the following school year. I felt secretary would be a great fit for me and I decided to run for this position due to my strengths such as being detail-oriented, organized, and outgoing (Values Level 1).
Although some other members on the executive board were not super active or engaged, I tried to lead by example and fulfill all duties expected of me as well as anything else above and beyond those responsibilities. This leadership philosophy of mine has helped me to grow as a leader and understand that I may not always think others' see what I do, but that they are always watching and aware of those who do more than others and truly put time into their commitments (Values Level 4). The 2020-21 school year was difficult as almost all activities had to be conducted via Zoom and this caused many Honors students to be quiet and disengaged if they even showed up to the meetings (Teams Level 3).
As the president of HSB my junior and now senior year, I use my leadership philosophy and way of life into my position by encouraging other executive members to step up and be active, contributing group members in order to hopefully get better attendance by Honors students at events (Teams Level 4). To add on, as a leader in high school I struggled to delegate tasks to other group members as I have high standards when it comes to work produced by a group. Starting my junior year of college in my role as Honors Student Body president I strived to delegate tasks to other executive board members as needed not only to relieve some of my workload, but to aid in the others' leadership growth (Values Level 4). Another aspect of leadership that helped the 2021-22 executive team was the cohesive, non-judgmental, fun nature of the group. Each executive member seemed to feel comfortable in their roles and were willing to step up to help if needed, which seemed to really help our group function better as a whole (Teams Levels 3-4). I hope to facilitate this type of dynamic with the executive board during the 2022-23 school year, as well as in my future career as a nurse as it is important to be able to work well within both individual and team settings.
